2017 & 2018 NAPA IN DEPTH

“The Ellman's work with an all-star team headed by Vineyard Manager Mike Wolf and Winemaker Andy Erickson. The Red Blend & Cabernet Sauvignon Jemma are made mostly from the Estate vineyard, with some outside fruit, while the Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is made from the family's vineyard in Soda Canyon. The wines are bold and lush, as they often are in this part of the Napa Valley. Ellman is going to be a fascinating winery to follow in the coming years.”

ELLMAN

“The flagship 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon The Estate is a terrific value even at its $175 price point. Loaded with notions of ripe black fruits, lead pencil shavings, graphite and incense, it hits the palate with a full-bodied richness, building tannins, terrific balance, and a great, great finish. It shows the more reserved, focused style of the vintage and is going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 20.”

Winemaking

“One of my favorite aspects of grape growing and winemaking is how the vines and wines mark time, year to year, season to season. I recently opened a bottle of the 2017 Jemma, and it was immediate gratification. I think it is the most forward and accessible straight out of the bottle.”
