Are you planning a trip out to the gorgeous wine country of Northern California? If so, you’ve likely noticed there’s a surplus of places to visit in the area. Trying to search on your own can be overwhelming. However, we’ve pulled together some must-see areas of wine country for you to check out.
First on our list is Napa, specifically the downtown area. Here, you will find an impressive collection of places to stay, shop, eat, and drink. One of the best parts of visiting Napa is that you can walk around the downtown area, not needing to worry about finding parking spots all day.
There are many restaurants downtown, from fine dining to farm-to-table eating experiences. Whenever you visit Napa, make sure you come hungry because you’ll want to try out as many of the restaurants as possible.
Make sure you also check out the Oxbow Public Market. There are over 20 merchants here for you to try out different foods and drinks and check out local goodies you won’t find anywhere else.
Of course, you’ll also want to check out one of the many wine tasting rooms in the area as well. The Vintner’s Collective is a local favorite because you can try many different varieties of Napa Valley wines right in one place.
Located outside of the hustle of Napa, Yountville is a quaint town of just 1.5 square miles. Yountville is said to be where the very first grapevines of Napa Valley were planted, making it the home of wine country. It’s well worth a visit for the small-town atmosphere and delicious restaurants.
While in Yountville, be sure to take a hot air balloon ride to get a stunning view of wine country in a unique way. Then, grab a ride on the free Yountville Trolley and take some time checking out local art at the Napa Valley Museum.
Calistoga has many unique activities that are well worth the drive north of Napa. Here, you can experience the relaxing benefits of soaking in thermal hot springs. This is a great way to unwind after a day of shopping and wine tasting.
You can also travel a couple of minutes outside of town and check out Old Faithful Geyser. Every 30 to 40 minutes, this natural geyser will shoot water up into the air. You can take a picnic lunch and even check out an animal farm and geology museum while there.
Sonoma offers a wide variety of attractions in addition to wine tasting as well. Many visitors enjoy going to Jack London State Historic Park. Here, you can visit a museum that’s dedicated to the author, Jack London. You can also check out the ruins of a 19th-century winery and even touch a 2,000-year-old redwood.
Make sure you spend some time in downtown Sonoma as well. The town was settled by the Spanish Fathers in the 19th century and it’s evident in the architecture you’ll see downtown. There are also many great shops and restaurants as well as some grassy areas for relaxing.
You also need to make some time to check out St. Helena, which offers many beautiful outdoor spaces. Crane Park is a 12-acre park that has a playground, horseshoe pits, and gorgeous areas for picnics. If you’re visiting in the summer months, come out on a Friday morning to check out the St. Helena Farmer’s Market on the park’s grounds.
You can also check out The Old Mill, which is one of the oldest buildings in all of Napa Valley. It’s the last water-powered mill in California and you can take a tour of it to see how it works and learn the history of the property. Make sure you grab a bag of milled grain while you’re there!
